3 1/2-Inch Solid Brass Door Hinge With Ball Finials

Screws provided with hinges have slot heads. My client and I prefer Phillips or the Canadian invented 'Robertson' (square recess) heads). Either of these prevent damaged or mangled heads while driving them.

I have purchased several items over the last year, mainly to restore doors in our house and I've been very pleased with all of them. My only complaint is that I think that the screw slot depth could be a little deeper as the will occasionally slip and damage the appearance of the finish on the screw.

I recently bought a two flat from the 1920s. The original closet doors had been removed at some poiunt and replace with cheap bi-fold louvered doors. Fortunately, the doors were stored in the basement. To rehang the doors, I needed new hinges and so purchased these. They worked great! They fit perfectly into the existing mortise and two of the three screw holes even lined up with the existing drilled holes. The match the existing hinges of other doors in the hosue well and I was thrilled that unlaquered brass was offered as a finish option. The only con would be that the screws they come with do not seem to be as high quality as the hinges and the screw slots got a bit hanged up with installation.

The hinges are quite well made. However they were a bit smaller/thinner than the existing hinges in the doors we intended to have them replaced in.

These hinges looked great without looking too closely, but didn't end up fitting my 1940 doors - the hinges were just a tiny bit taller and thicker, and the holes not in the same place. There are 3 other similar options I would have liked to try, but was out of the 45 day max return window so customer service told me they could not be returned or exchanged. All said, I have 3 sets of hinges and 2 sets of tubular latches with mortise and strikes which are new but cannot be returned. In the end we scraped down the old ones and painted them - turned out pretty good.

These are very well constructed hinges and they should give years of service. My only complaint is that it appears that the hinge mounting screws appear to be a #7. This size is not readily available at my local hardware stores. Because we were remounting salvage doors that had been mounted with #8, we had to up-size to a #8 which does not fit flush with the hinge face. If these could be machined to fit a #8 screw, I would give this a 5 star rating.

With an addition to a craftsman style house, we needed hardware to match the existing and function for a lifetime. These hinges hit the spot. Even the slotted screws are a nice touch although most of us hate to use them. Just be warned that the hole patterns do not line up with standard lumber yard hinge screw holes. We mortised in ""disposable"" hinges to use on the doors during the construction process that measured the same size. After the painters finished the doors, we had to fill the holes in those doors with golf tees and glue, then re-drill for the new hinges to work. Not a deal breaker by far, just a slight aggravation.
