Description

This exceptional Windsor-pattern mortise lock is adorned with a whimsical aesthetic design. Introduced by Reading Hardware in 1885, it’s just as fresh and lovely today. The lock features a 1/8” thick solid-brass face plate and interior components, and a heavy cast-zinc case. Available in our most popular finishes, it’s suited for almost any décor. This set comes complete with two brass skeleton keys and is reversible for left- or right-hand doors. We also sell matching Windsor parts, so you can create your own door set.

When using this as a replacement lock, it is important to measure existing cutouts on your door, including the backset, face plate, and mortise pocket. Some modification of your cutouts may be required.

Dimensions. Faceplate: 6" T x 1" W x 1/8" thick. Strike Plate: 4 5/16" T x 1" W with 1/2" tongue. Lock Box: 3 3/4" T x 11/16" W x 2 7/8" D. The backset is a standard 2 1/4". Lock hub fits a 9/32" spindle.

Hardware Tip

Backset: On a lock or latch, it is the distance from the front of the face plate to the center of the knob hub. On the door, it is from the edge of the door to the center of the door knob.

Great Service and a Great Product

Comments:

The mortice lock was as described and a perfect fit for what was needed.

Very inconsistent from lock to lock, housing is pot metal.

Comments:

Bought 12 of these. These locks were going into brand new doors with no holes previous to installation. The faceplates look nice but a lot of them are not flat some have a rainbow bend in them going two different directions. The tolerance between locks is poor, length and width of the faceplates vary by up to .050"" which might not be a big deal for some but I build a custom jig so I could use a router for all the recesses for the faceplates but since NONE of them are the same size I had to start with the most undersize lock first then modify the jig for each additional lock that was bigger. That also meant that I had to redo the math for every single door so that all the backplates were at the same height when finished. The backset is supposed to be 2 1/4"" some of my locks it was a little longer and I had to mill .020"" from the inside of the faceplate to get the back set at exactly 2 1/4"" . I spent 2 days making my jig then found out the keyhole wasnt where it was supposed to be and couldnt get the key in without milling the faceplate to correct the backset. the spindle hub is also oversize so the spindle fits sloppy inside and the knob will turn 45 degrees before it does anything. apparently they sell shims to fix that but the lock SHOULD have been made the right way so you dont have to jerry rig it with shims. There is no template or a sheet that says what any of the locks dimensions are for fitting, just the overall dimensions listed on the website but as I said they all measured different with calipers all were slightly shorter then 6"" (5.880 "" - 5.990"" )Also all the parts inside the lock are rough cast and finish ground with a grinder. the black housing is just pot metal and not cast iron like the originals. the key turns smooth once everything is fitted right and they do look nice once they are done but what a pain to get them back to my standards, I ended up custom making my own spindles because I didnt like the wobble. Maybe they should them made in the USA
