""Clarks Tip"" Cast Iron Shutter Hinges
Comments:
Repaired and replaced as needed shutters on an 18 24 home that is on the National Register of historic places. The hinges worked perfectly and were an axact match to what was on the house.
Adds a Unique Touch to my Products
Comments:
I construct coffee tables and ice chests with reclaimed wood. These hinges are provide a perfect look for my products. I usually allow them to rust a little before sealing them to add a more rustic effect to my products.
Cast Iron Shutter hinges
Comments:
Worked great on shudders. Very authentic look and smooth operation. Easy to install.
check before you use
Comments:
Very poor castings, we dropped 2 from the second floor into the flower beds( soft landing ) and they broke into pieces. Tried dropping one from about 3' on to the wood porch floor and it broke in half! We tested the rest by dropping them on the porch floor and only used them on the first floor shutters. Did not want to take a chance with the second floor.
Clarks Tip 1 1/4
Comments:
The castings are very rough and some of the mounting holes need to be drilled out. The gravity system used to keep the shutters against the house DOES NOT WORK. The larger Clark tip hinges work well but they offset the shutters further from the house.

Great items
Good Reproduction, Minor Pattern Issues
Comments:
The reviewer who complained that the castings shattered when dropped may be unfamiliar with the properties of cast iron. The material is inherently very brittle, and even the best quality castings therefore shatter very easily, especially in colder temperatures. That is why steel replaced cast iron in all industrial uses as soon as it could be made economically. However, as another reviewer noted, the casting pattern is not as clean as it might be, and the pieces may need some reworking. That is a common problem with castings made from molds of reproductions or deteriorated originals (which I suspect was the case here).
Great hinges if you paint them right
Comments:
Selected two sets of these cast iron hinges to hang Charleston style pine shutters that are very lightweight. I mounted them in brick on a one story house from the 30s. These hinges need to be painted with heavy duty paint that doesn't peel when the hinges are operated. Because the hinges are an old design there is lots of friction between the hinge and pintle , so it's difficult to achieve an efficient coat. Other than that they are great.
Make sure they are matched
Comments:
They come matched, since they are cast it is possible that the shutters won't close properly if you mix them up like I did. Other than that they are great. I ended up using philips head screws as I couldn't find traditional slotted head. If that's important to you you probably have a source.
