The fitter is the outside diameter of the round opening at the small end of the shade. This should be a little smaller than the size of the shade holder on your fixture.

Nice craftsmanship, not as opaque as I hoped

Let me first say, I love the style of this sconce and the quality is very high. I chose it for the kitchen in my craftsman home that my husband and I are remodeling. What you can't tell from the images online is that the glass is not as opaque as it appears. (Pay attention to ""sand-blasted"" vs. ""opal"" descriptions.) They're more translucent. I had hoped it would pair well with the schoolhouse globes we had gotten. (They don't, but I'm going to try a fix.) Other than that, I am happy with the shape and quality of these shades. I would recommend them to a friend but with that caveat.
